The record for running the fastest mile while wearing swim fins is 7 min. 56 sec., set by Ashrita Furman of N.Y. in 2010.
Don't trash your old kicks. Donate 'em. Nike's Reuse-A-Shoeprogram collects more than 1.5 million pairs a year. Nike grinds them into material for courts, tracks and playgrounds. In Marin, ArchRivals two athletic stores collect about 1,500 used shoes a month and donate them to countries in need. And Edgar Hernandez, a 44-year-old San Rafael resident and runner, has collected and sent thousands of used shoes to Guatemala.

This is what I like about the Sun Valley library. I love how the librarian always reads us a fun and exciting book before we get to work at finding our own books. I also love the way the class gets quiet almost instantly, so people can read their books. The class also gets to make their own bookmarks! Clearly, these are some facts to explain how much I love the library and the librarian.

Run For Reading is a program that encourages kids to run, have fun and raise money for the school libraries. What Run For Reading does is amazing. First, most kids love to run. By running, they get into better shape and have healtier bodies. Not only is it fun, but it's exercising at the same time! It's also a fundraiser. Every person who participates and runs gets sponsors to sponsor them per lap. For example, just by running 10 laps around the course, you could earn at least $5 for the libraries! Imagine how much money all the kids at all the schools could make. That would really make a difference. Run For Reading is also fun for the kids because if you're a kid who loves to run, then once you see the score that you got on your tag and t-shirt, then you would feel good inside. Maybe if you don't get the score that you wanted, then every year you can train harder so you can compete against yourself adn get better each year. You can set goals for yourself. Run For Reading is fun for me because it makes me feel good to see how many laps I ran and how well I've improved over the last coupld of years. Everybody at Glenwood School loves Run For Reading and wants to do it again. We love Run for Reading.

They are doing something to support themselves and their education. It's an incredible accomplishment.

If you ran in last year's Run For Reading, grab your old T-shirt, look at the number of laps you did. If it says you ran 20 laps, run 25 this year. Get more pledges, do more laps and earn more money for the schools.
It's an incredible thing when you can get your students to do things supporting the programs. What a true testament to themselves.
